The last few months have highlighted the importance of thoroughly cleaning our house and keeping it germ-free. Especially as life begins to shift back to normality and we are allowed people from other households in our home and gardens.
COVID-19 has made safety everyone’s number one priority, so it is important that you know how to disinfect and clean your tiles, what cleaning products you should be using, and how often you should be doing it. Cleaning your tiles, while it is not always a fun task, will prolong the quality of your wall and floor tiles whilst keeping them looking brand-new and gleaming!
Disinfecting your tiles
Although you may clean your surfaces as part of your daily clean routine, it is important to focus individually on your tiles to tackle any dirt or grime as soon as it appears. You may notice that your tiles start to develop a hazy film or your light grout colour starts to dull – these are both indicators that your tiles need more than a dry sweep or hoover.
Cleaning tiles generally requires a simple application of soap and water or one of many available tile cleaners. However, to thoroughly clean and disinfect your tiles if they become riddled with bacteria or covered in mildew, you will need:
The combination of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar acts as a disinfectant and are great for long-lasting shine. You can even add a few drops of essential oils for a fresh scent! Simply pour your disinfecting mix into a spray bottle to spray tile walls or soak a mop to clean across tile floors.
Rinse your surfaces with cool water and allow the tiles to air dry naturally. You will not only have brighter tiles, but they also should be completely free of bacteria and contaminants.
Maintaining your tiles
Now that our stores are back open, we would highly recommend using the Lithofin cleaning range available to buy from YTC. Our full range will help protect and maintain your tiles and grout, so they look new for longer! Products like the Lithofin Easy Cleaner can be used across multiple surfaces, such as ceramic, terracotta, quarry tiles, and all types of stone, making a great investment for your cleaning kit!
Choosing the right mop
As trivial as it sounds, the right mop matters. We recommend using a rag or chamois-type mop for your floor. You MUST change your mop water regularly as this is another way your tiles will build a hazy film. We recommend mopping once a week.
For walls, we also suggest using cloth instead of a sponge. We have found in the past that sponges tend to push dirty water into grout lines, giving you twice the work.
So, whether you have recently laid your tiles, or you’ve had your tiles for a while, following these simple steps will keep your tiles and grout looking brand-new.
