Over 60 years of history…
— 1946 —
Following active service in WW2, Sheffield born Albert Nichols set up his own business manufacturing tiled hearths to a local shop on Spital Hill, ably assisted by Ron Simpkins he buys the Shop.
— 1951 —
Albert buys an ex-coach house in Sheffield, continuing to manufacture fireplaces from the basement.
— 1969 —
During the 1960’s, wall tile sales had started to overtake fireplace sales and DIY tiling became increasingly popular. Albert saw an opportunity and partnered with his son, Eric Nichols, to open ‘The Tile Shop’ on London Road. Sadly, in 1973, Albert passed away.
— 1974 —
The ‘South Yorkshire Tile Company Ltd’ was established and all of the businesses are consolidated to a new site on Hill Street, Bramall Lane (Sheffield), the present location.
— 1977 —
The current Chief Executive – Stefan Firth – joined the company.
— 1983 —
The current Managing Director – Chris Morrison – joins.
— 1985 —
Stefan Firth was appointed Associate Director.
— 1989 —
Stefan Firth became Sales Director.
— 1992 —
The company opened a second branch in Doncaster.
— 1994 —
Further expansion takes place as Nortile Distributors was acquired with stores in Leeds and Newcastle upon Tyne. The company name was changed to ‘The Yorkshire Tile Company Ltd’, but continues to trade as ‘Nortile’ in the North East.
— 2004 —
Stefan Firth became Chief Executive and Chris Morrison became Managing Director following total acquisition of company shares.
— 2007 —
A fifth branch opened in Worksop.
— 2012 —
The Leeds branch relocated to new premises on Gelderd Lane.
— 2013 —
Eric Nichols sadly passes away.
— 2014 —
Nortile, the Newcastle branch rebrands to Nortile Discount Tiles and moves to new premises on St Lawrence Road. The company celebrates 40 years of trading, Talking Tiles since 1974 and launches new branding, website and brochure.
Products and suppliers
We source our tiles from across the globe including Italy, Spain and even in the UK to ensure our customers have the widest variety of tiles possible to choose from. Our buying team regularly visit our suppliers and trade shows around the world to bring you the most on point collection with trends, styles and current designs at the forefront of their buying decisions.
For tradesmen and DIY enthusiasts, we sell everything you need for your project including grouts and adhesives, tile trims, under tile heating, backer boards and accessories supplied by manufacturers including Building Adhesives Ltd (BAL), Genesis, James Hardie, Devi and Rubi.
Thought we only sold tiles? We also sell a wide range of bathroom suites, furniture and accessories to suit any budget and taste. We buy from a range of suppliers including Villeroy and Boch so can offer everything from complete bathroom suites to individual bespoke designs tailored to your needs.
We currently have 45 members in team YTC all working in various departments, sales, warehousing and the office team. We are proud to say several members of our team have been with us for over 25 years! On average, our senior sales staff have 10 years experience within the company which is exactly why our customer service and product knowledge is second to none.

Our commitment to the environment
We are proud to source our products from suppliers that take positive actions in their manufacturing process to reduce their impact on the environment. This includes recycling ceramic waste, re-using water, and saving energy by speeding up kilns and re-using kiln exit heat.
Furthermore, we have backed some of our suppliers environmental schemes by bringing into stock tiles manufactured from recycled materials like the Forest floor tile range.
In addition to the above, wooden pallets are re-used and second hand pallets are purchased and repaired. Our suppliers also use recycled materials for the majority of their packaging.
We also like to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling paper, ink cartridges and product packaging. In the office we support e-billing wherever possible to reduce paper usage. Flat screen monitors are also used throughout our branches instead of CRT monitors.
